START YOUR OWN GRLSWIRL
We’re looking for people like to YOU to help expand the GRLSWIRL community to cities all over the world! If you don’t see your city currently listed, and you want to lead your own GRLSWIRL community, then read below.
If you aren’t interested in starting your own GRLSWIRL, but want to be notified if we open up in your city, please scroll to the bottom of the page.
Be a part of the revolution! Be the change in your city.
GRLSWIRL community leaders make a key difference in the lives of GRLS by guiding them through the GRLSWIRL experience! We want leading your city group to be a great time, which is why we'll support you every step of the way. Creating and cultivating a community should be fun, rewarding, but also consistent. We’re looking for grls who are committed to creating an inclusive and safe space where every grl feels welcome.
Grlswirl is about bringing femininity to skate and getting more grls on boards. Lifting each other up, rather than tearing each other down is core to what we believe in and we want leaders who believe in those things too. This is a community that brings people together for free, and has pride in its neighborhood. We believing in giving back to local businesses and nonprofits, putting on events for our friends and neighbors, and making skating fun for everyone!
To let you know what we’re not looking for… if you’re looking to expand your clientele, or a business owner looking to promote your business, GRLSWIRL won’t be a great fit. Our number one goal is to bring women together through skate and create a more unified community. At the end of the day, that comes before everything else.
Everyone can start and skate community, not everyone can start and run GRLSWIRL.
We know that starting a Grlswirl community can be tough, so we created this page to give you an idea of what it takes.
We provide our leaders:
Activity Plans to help you plan and run events.
Individual guidance from our Support team.
WHAt does it take to be a grlswirl community leader?
How many GRLS do you need to start a Grlswirl community?
We require at least two grls to run a Grlswirl Chapter.
How much time does it require?
You are obligated to hold a safe place of communication for all girls who join your skates. You must plan 2 group skates per month, and put together at least 4 community events per year. You must be present at every single group skate. Sure, it will happen where you miss a group skate, but that’s where your co-leaders will help you out. To grow the community though, you’ll need 100% commitment.
Between communicating and planning, it’s up to you how much time you put into it. You’ll start with the 2 group skates a month to get a feel for the amount of time it takes, then start branching into hosting community and philanthropic events.
We’re looking for grls who want to jump into this and film grls learning new skate tricks, falling, having fun with each other and making funny faces. You’ll be an inspiration and a leader for the grls in your community. You’ll be the face of Grlswirl in your town, leading the enthusiasm, the love and the passion for skateboarding.
This is a part-time volunteer job that some weeks can fill enough hours to be seen as a second, completely unpaid, full-time job. You will start with only two group skates per month which will fall on a Tuesday. Growing your Tuesday community meet up will give you a good idea of what adding a Friday or a Monday will feel like.
What does it look like to be a leader?
Outgoing Personality: Grlswirl community leaders are outgoing, personable and encouraging. Typically they are serial community builders. Not only are you passionate about sharing skate, but you’re passionate about bringing women together. We’re a grassroots community that started and is rooted in word of mouth expansion. As a leader, you’ll need to be talking to strangers, friends of friends, acquaintances, and even your neighborhood business owners. Your word of mouth recruiting is HUGE. Honestly, how are you at interacting with complete strangers?
Local: Grlswirl community leaders need to be familiar with the community and able to recruit other grls that they know and don’t know. We want someone who is familiar with their town and have been living there for a while. We don’t want someone who is just passing through for the summer.
Creative/Social Media/Content: Each leader is responsible to create and manage an instagram account for their GRLSWIRL team. New to social media?! This will be an education that you’ll have to jump into immediately. All Co-Leaders must be well versed in Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/IG Stories and must own (or be able to find)a camera to capture legit images at all skates/events. All guidelines will be provided to you.
Skate Level: Do you have the be THE best skater out there? Absolutely not. Do you have to be a motivator?… yeah, you do. We don’t need you to be a ripper, but we do want to see you improve your skate skills. If you’re not working towards something, why should anyone else be? Set the example by showing you’re willing to improve.
This is not for you if you:
Have a job that requires a lot of travel that could take you away from the chapter you’re thinking of starting.
Are a student or a professional associated with late night hours or unpredictable schedules that could keep you in bed in the morning hours.
Are not comfortable teaching others the basics of skating.
Are not comfortable with public speaking.
Once you’re in, you’re in. Essentially you’re going to be a leader in your community and it will be by far the best feeling you could ever have.
You’ll hug strangers, meet business owners, inspire young girls, and take photos. You’ll lead skates and events that will be the best part of many people’s day/week/life. You’ll watch people get better, fall in love with skating, create real connections, and generally bring this small world even closer together. This is serious stuff we’re dealing with. Please don’t step up unless you’re committed to everything you read above.
